Morning Star Gallery Holds Artist Reception, Spotlights Glass Jewelry

Morning Star Gallery, located at 257 Sunset Drive, will host a reception honoring artist Brad Stroman on Friday, September 10, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. as part of Sunset Stroll on Sunset Drive.

Stroman will be on hand to show his acrylic paintings for which he has gained considerable acclaim, and as an artist-activist, Stroman combines his passion for creating art with his concerns for the environment.

Visitors to Morning Star Gallery will see examples of Stroman’s paintbox leaves as well as oil paintings and sculpture by Greg Osterhaus, Linda Leeger Stokes, Trena McNabb, Rod Shaw and Nan Jacobsohn. The gallery’s focus on fine American crafts includes large blown glass vessels, works in wood, ceramics, pottery and artisan jewelry.

The current jewelry collection features Katya’s dichroic glass Trunk Show, and will be on display at the gallery through Monday, September 20.

The stones in Katya’s jewelry are actually hand-made dichroic fused glass beads. By carefully manipulating the bubbles and ripples inherent in hand-blown glass, Katya lets them serve as the main attraction and design elements in her silver and gold jewelry.  Many pieces of micro-thin layers of different colors, densities and transparencies of glass are stacked and fused together to create her color-saturated jewelry designs. The glass is fused at 1,600 degrees and meticulously ground and heat polished. The complex process is what gives her jewelry the rich quality of precious stones.

“The work is not glamorous, but the end result is,” Katya said.

For more information about the reception or Katya’s jewelry, call the gallery at 828-295-6991.

Art & Artifacts Features Local Artists In Light, Color & Form

Art & Artifacts and Blowing Rock Gallery of Homes & Land will sponsor the show Light, Color & Form featuring paintings by Steve Brooks and sculpture by Joël Urruty, both of Hickory.

Part of Sunset Stroll, the opening reception will be Friday, September 10, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at 159 Sunset Drive. The reception is open to the public.

Brooks paints mostly from memory and refers to subjects only occasionally. His favorite aspects of painting are color and pictorial structure; which ultimately combine in a provocative way to create an atmosphere of color space. Brooks’ images are relics of visual experiences, and for him, painting is where thought, observation and activity collide—imperfect, but candid in concept and execution.

Urruty, of Basque heritage, creates elegant sculptures that capture the true essence of the subject matter. He sculpts pieces of wood into minimalist figures, void of any superfluous information, and then masks the wood with paint to allow the form to take precedence over the material.  Using monochromatic colors, Urruty allows the shadows to play off the subtle shifting facets of his sculptures. Urruty works out of his studio in Hickory and exhibits his works in the Hickory Museum, San Francisco and New York.
