Town Holds Annual Boone Cleanup Day September 18
Watauga River Big Sweep Follows September 25
What do a lawn mower, a bag of Yoohoo drink lids and a check written on November 27, 1979, have in common?
All three were found during the spring Boone Cleanup Day last April, and the volunteers who brought them in received cash prizes for winning the Most Unusual Litter Contest.
Participants will once again have the opportunity to top these finds as the Town of Boone holds its annual fall Boone Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 18, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
In conjunction with a statewide proclamation designating September 18 to October 2 as North Carolina’s Fall Litter Sweep 2010, Boone is encouraging all citizens to join the Adopt-A-Street and Stream organizations to remove litter that has accumulated within town limits during the summer.
During the cleanup day, all streets and streams inside the town limits that are adopted are cleaned, and if segments are not adopted, Shannon Isaacs, Boone’s Adopt-A-Street/Stream/Flowerbed coordinator, will designate them to volunteers.
Isaacs said there are still several areas available for adoption, including one stream segment, 17 streets and three flowerbeds.
Those who wish to participate in the cleanup day should come by the Town of Boone Public Works Center, located at 321 East King Street, between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to pick up cleaning supplies, or supplies may be picked up prior to the event.
For those who think they may have found something interesting, bring unusual litter found on the roadsides and streams within town limits to the Public Works Center on the event day. Monetary prizes will again be awarded to the winners. Refreshments will also be served from noon to 1:30 p.m., and attendees will have the opportunity to share the day’s experiences at that time.
Boone residents who choose to participate by cleaning the area around their property may call the Public Works Department for additional free curbside junk or yard debris pickup during September 18 to October 2.
Last spring’s cleanup day resulted in approximately 215 pounds of recycling and 3,260 pounds of trash and debris being collected from Boone’s streets, streams and trails.
Those who can’t make the first cleanup day can volunteer for the Watauga River Big Sweep on Saturday, September 25, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Last year, 172 volunteers collected more than 6,000 pounds of trash—and this year, there are plenty of opportunities to be a part of the cleanup. Those interested can volunteer individually or with a group, and there is also the need for site captains who help volunteers find their cleanup area and take the trash to a dumpster or trailer. Funds are also needed for dumpsters, cleaning supplies and food, snacks and drinks for sites.
