The dog days of summer may be over, but pets take center stage in September as the Watauga Humane Society hosts its annual pet show on Sunday, September 12, and Dog Jog on Saturday, September 25.

Pet Show—Sunday

This Sunday’s pet show will be held in the center court of the Boone Mall. The event is free and open to any domesticated animal: snails, snakes, rabbits—any creature you call your furry friend is welcome. The show is a chance to show off your pet and mingle with other pet owners. Every pet will be a winner, with prizes awarded for floppiest ears, waggiest tail and fluffiest fur.

Registration will begin at 2:30 p.m., and the pet show will begin immediately after. The show will also include a pet memorial poster and a raffle with pet-themed prizes. Watauga Humane Society t-shirts, magnets and decals will be available for sale, and animals up for adoption will be located at the front of the mall.

Dogs are required to be on a leash during the event, and all other animals should be kept in appropriate carriers when they are not being shown. The mall requests that pets stay in the center court area and not enter the stores.

So grab your pug, Persian, parakeet or pot-bellied pig, wear your most winning smiles and your nicest matching sweaters, and enjoy the festivities. For more info, call 828-264-6468.

Dog Jog—September 25

Saturday, September 25, High Country dog lovers will gather on the Greenway Trail in Boone for some exercise, fresh air and fun at the Watauga Humane Society’s 12th annual Dog Jog. The event is a fundraiser for Humane Society shelter animals and includes a one-mile jog/walk and a full day of dog-related activities.

Show some competitive spirit in the Best Trick, Best Costume and Best Pet/Owner Look-Alike contests, then spend some quality time with your canine having chair massages and dog massages provided by the Sanctuary Day Spa. There will also be paw painting and face painting.

Registration and pledge forms are available now at the Watauga Humane Society shelter at 200 Casey Lane, Bare Bones Boutique Thrift Store on old U.S. Highway 421, Bare Essentials Natural Market, The Pet Place, SageSport at the Boone Mall, Joe's Italian Kitchen and local veterinarian offices.

Early registration will be held in front of SageSport at the Boone Mall on Friday, September 24, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Registration the day of the event will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Watauga County Parks & Recreation Complex, and the Dog Jog begins at 11:00 a.m. The $20 registration fee ($18 if postmarked by Friday, September 10) includes a long-sleeved t-shirt. The registration fee for students is $15.

The Watauga Humane Society requires that your dog wear current ID and rabies vaccination tags and be kept on a six-foot or shorter leash at all times. The event is not appropriate for dogs under six months of age. Water will be provided for dogs and owners, and you are expected to clean up after your dog.

For more information, call the Watauga Humane Society Shelter at 828-264-7865 or Rachel at 828-264-1053.
