Greater Avery Tour de Art October 23

The final Greater Avery Tour de Art event of the season takes place on Saturday, October 23, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 10 galleries and studios in the Foscoe, Banner Elk, Linville and greater Avery County areas.

The gallery tour includes paintings, pottery, sculpture, fine art reproductions, framing, lighting and more by established and emerging artists. Galleries may also feature refreshments, special sales and other activities.

A map of the entire tour is available at each location, and directional signs help guide gallery tourists along the 105, 184, 194 and 221 highways.

Artist Kevin Beck specializes in landscapes in oils and pastels. During Tour de Art, the studio will display brand new paintings of the peak leaf season in the High Country. The studio will serve herbal tea from its organic herb garden.

ArtPurveyors will feature an exhibition titled Old Produce, a series of vintage mixed media still life illustrations by Mike Hill. The reception for the artist will be Saturday, October 23, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. during the Greater Avery Tour de Art.

Enjoy a glass of wine during the Tour de Art at Artpurveyors, where you’ll also find Tour de Art maps, stickers and t-shirts.

Take a tour of Toni Carlton’s new studio as an additional part of Carlton Gallery. Works include drawings, brush drawings, touch drawings, calligraphy, mixed media collage and more. Celebrating 28 years of having a gallery and artist studio, Carlton continues to expand in the exploration of art in many media.

Carlton Gallery is located 10 miles south of Boone on Highway 105 between Boone and Linville in the Grandfather Community.

The Art Cellar Gallery will show vibrant autumn landscapes by David Birmingham, new work by nationally recognized artist William Dunlap, rich still lifes in oil by Loren DiBenedetto, regional landscapes by artists Gregory Smith and John Matthews and figurative and landscape paintings by Norma Murphy.

For the October 23 Tour de Art, Alta Vista Gallery invites you to its 20th Anniversary Party featuring the gallery’s newest artist, Sheila Wood Hancock. Hancock’s oil paintings are in the traditional Impressionist style of Monet and the French masters and are available in a variety of sizes, including paintings as small as 5-by-7 inches.

“I represent over 100 artists here, and although Hancock is the newest one, she immediately won our People’s Choice Award,” said Maria Santomasso-Hyde, gallery owner. “Her oils have been loved by collectors for a long time, but she is new to the High Country.”

Refreshments will be served, including wine from Shelton Vineyards. Alta Vista Gallery shows 100 artists in oils, pastels, watercolors and limited edition prints, as well as kaleidoscopes, stained glass, fused glass, handmade jewelry, art tiles and Mangum Pottery. 

7. Avery Arts Council

During October, the Avery Arts Council gallery reflects vibrant landscapes from two accomplished painters, Jessie Schmitt and Gisele Weisman.

Schmitt often uses photographs she has taken to create her richly detailed paintings, but she also paints in plein air whenever possible. Weisman’s expressive paintings emerge from her inner self. Well known for her playful figures and impressionistic landscapes, her patrons love her work for its joyfulness and exuberance. A select collection of Weisman’s dancing bronzes are also featured. 

8. 87 Ruffin St. Gallery

87 Ruffin St. Gallery features a large collection of Southern folk art, woodcarvings and hundreds of artful pieces, from pottery to handcrafted furniture. Refreshments will be served. The gallery is located beside the Old Hampton Store in Linville, which features live music during the Tour de Art.

9. Crossnore Gallery

The Crossnore Fine Arts Gallery, located on the campus of the Crossnore School in the historic Weaving Room, will present an exhibition of Crossnore students featuring fall landscapes in the plein air tradition. During the Tour de Art, view the artists’ work and also enjoy refreshments. While you are there, walk through the stone paths of the labyrinth beside the gallery, visit the Ben Long fresco in the Sloop Chapel and view many bronze sculptures of children throughout the campus.

Located on the campus of The Crossnore School, the Crossnore Fine Arts Gallery is a nonprofit gallery that represents regional painters, sculptors and fine crafters who take part in benefiting the children of The Crossnore School.

10. Linville River Pottery

Visit Patti Connor-Greene and Dan Greene’s working clay studio and kiln. Linville River Pottery features stoneware and porcelain vases, teapots, bowls and mugs handmade on a kickwheel. The studio also has original wall hangings by Virginia McKinney Greene, unique handmade aprons and pillowcases by Jennifer Franz and colorful fabric market bags by Barbara Aycock.

Linville River Pottery will serve homemade ginger cookies and cold organic green tea on the day of the tour. The studio is open on other days by appointment.
