Since mid-January, DJs smallwonder and Jebron Lames have dropped beats with weekly Squishy Dance Parties at Black Cat Burrito in Boone.

Those who’ve been around Boone since the early days of Black Cat know the restaurant has a reputation for hosting some of the hippest parties in town. Over the last few months, the tight confines of the “slightly divey” restaurant have been transformed to a dance floor as the crowds have come out, got down and moved their feet.

“We came up with the idea and we decided on the name ‘Squishy,’” dj smallwonder explained. “Bottom line is, when Black Cat packs out for a big dance party it can get squishy in there with a bunch of sweaty bodies dancing. We just wanted to pack it out every time—that’s what we were originally aiming for.”

The DJs like to keep the parties fresh by changing up the music styles for each party.

“Since we’ve been doing them, we’ve been trying to mix it up a little bit by playing different types of music,” said smallwonder. “I imagine that next week, the 18th we’ll come pretty hard with electronic, bass heavy stuff.”

In the future, the resident DJs will invite a variety of guest DJs and musical acts to join them on the Black Cat stage. Beginning in April, Squishy dance parties will take place every other Friday at 10:30 p.m. The cover is usually $5, and parties are 18 and up.

On Thursday, March 17, at 10:00 p.m., Black Cat will feature a double-billed performance presented by Speakeasy Tattoos and 641 rpm. The show will feature North Carolina-based punk rock band ANTiSEEN in a rare Boone performance. The band has played its signature brand of “destructive rock” for 28 years following its first performance ever at the Apple Barn in Valle Crucis in 1983. The cover is $5.

“They’ve never played Black Cat before,” Kevin Freeman of 641rpm said. “They are the kings of destructive rock; that pretty much sums it up.”

The show will also feature Captain Stab Tuggo, a one-man, sword-swallowing circus act who does a number of unique tricks and feats that should simultaneously shock and entertain the audience.
