Annual BIG Sale at Legends Saturday

The BIG Sale, an annual event at ASU, will be held Saturday, August 20, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Legends on campus. Organized by Appalachian and the Community Together (ACT), the university’s volunteer clearinghouse, The BIG Sale is a giant indoor yard sale featuring items donated by students or salvaged at the end of spring semester as part of the Don’t Throw it Away campaign.

Furniture, kitchenware, bedroom accessories, clean carpets, clothing and non-perishable food items will be available for sale. Proceeds will benefit four local charities: Mountain Alliance, N.C. Cooperative Extension, The Farm at Mollies Branch and Cherokee Cove retreat center, as well as an international service-learning scholarship at ASU.

During the Don’t Throw it Away campaign last May, students were asked to donate items in good condition that they would normally throw away at the end of the academic year or no longer could use. Many items simply left behind by students were also collected.

“In 2009 we saved 52 tons of items from the landfill, and in 2010 we saved 65 tons. So, each year it’s growing,” said Kate Johnson, assistant director of community service.

The BIG Sale was started in 2000 by Natalie Knight, an ASU student who noticed the large amounts of “trash” students were throwing away at the end of the school year. She started by collecting items herself and donating them to OASIS, a domestic abuse shelter. When the volume of donations became too much for her or OASIS to handle, she contacted Dump and Run, a national organization that helps organize events like The BIG Sale on college campuses.

Since its inception, the sale has generated about $82,000 for local charities.
